NIMS TIGER
Training to Improve General medical Education awareness and Research (T.I.G.E.R) is an awareness programme of NIMS Medicity under Mother Theresa Quality and service policy aiming proper awareness to public in every aspect of Life. T.I.G.E.R will act as an anytime information for by public by conducting various informative training programmes and seminars by giving an opportunity for public to interact with experts in concerned sectors.
NIMS SPECTRUM CHILD DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH CENTRE
At the heart of NIMS Medicity’s Social Mission lies its deep compassion for children with developmental challenges. The NIMS SPECTRUM Child Development Research Centre (CDRC) was founded to bring together every form of care a child with special needs may require – physical, emotional, behavioural, and developmental – all under one roof.
Guided by the vision of Dr. M.K.C. Nair, former Vice Chancellor of the Kerala University of Health Sciences, the Centre stands as a symbol of empathy-driven healthcare. It focuses on early identification, family-centered intervention, and long-term support, helping children realize their fullest potential while restoring hope to their families.
True to its spirit of service, the Centre follows a unique principle – “We give all we have and take what you give.” This compassionate approach ensures that no child is ever denied care due to financial hardship, reaffirming NIMS’s enduring commitment to inclusive and affordable healthcare for every child in need.
NIMS HEART TO HEART (FREE HEART SURGERY PROJECT)
Under this project, NIMS Hospital has been providing free heart surgeries to individuals living below the poverty line. To date, 376 free heart surgeries have been successfully performed for underprivileged patients from Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts of Kerala. The NIMS Heart Foundation has so far conducted 30,160 Angiograms, 11,000 Angioplasties, and 6750 Open-Heart Surgeries under the “NIMS Heart to Heart Project”, a noble initiative launched with the objective of supporting poor and helpless patients. Padma Shri Bharat Mammootty serves as the Project Ambassador for “Heart to Heart”. In association with the Mammootty Fans Association, NIMS has been carrying out free heart surgeries for those below the poverty line. Under the Heart to Heart Project, 54 open-heart surgeries have been successfully performed so far, helping these families return to normal life with renewed hope and aspirations. Additionally, cardiology camps were organized in rural areas of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts, where more than 14,000 patients received free heart check-ups and treatment. Selected patients were also provided with free angiograms and angioplasties.
NEYYATTINKARA PENSION PLAN (FREE PENSION FOR DIFFERENTLY-ABLED CHILDREN)
The “Neyyattinkara Pension Plan” is a monthly pension scheme for differently-abled children residing in Neyyattinkara Municipality; Athiyannoor, Kollayil, Kottukal, Balaramapuram, Perumkadavila, Kalliyoor, Chenkal, Vilappil, and Kanjiramkulam panchayats; and the Poonthura ward under Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most affected groups was differently-abled children and their families. In addition to continued therapies and training, access to nutritional food is crucial for their well-being. However, many parents were unable to afford proper nutrition during the pandemic. In response, NIMS launched the “Neyyattinkara Pension Plan” to provide monthly financial assistance to differently-abled children to meet their nutritional needs. Currently, 453 children from the above-mentioned regions are benefitting from this scheme. The project was inaugurated on 11th June 2021 by Shri P.K. Rajmohan, Chairman, Neyyattinkara Municipality.
FREE DIALYSIS AND RENAL TRANSPLANTATION PROJECT
The Department of Nephrology at NIMS Medicity, headed by Dr. Manju Thampy, was established in October 2008 with a fully functional Dialysis Unit. The department provides comprehensive patient care covering all aspects of Nephrology, including preventive Nephrology, Acute Kidney Injury, Glomerulonephritis, Vasculitis, Electrolyte and acid-base disorders, Hypertension, Genetic Kidney Diseases, Renal Complications of Pregnancy, Kidney Stone Disease, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), and Renal Osteodystrophy. The department offers complete diagnostic, consultative, and treatment services for patients with kidney diseases across all stages—from early renal dysfunction to End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). It also provides care for patients with Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, High Blood Pressure, Kidney Stones, and other related conditions.
Equipped with round-the-clock continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) and hemodialysis facilities, including dialysis units in the intensive care units, the department also features twin operation theatres and a six-bedded post-transplant ICU with advanced infrastructure.
NIMS Medicity has initiated a Free Dialysis Project for needy and financially disadvantaged patients in and around Thiruvananthapuram District, under which 9,548 free dialysis sessions have been conducted so far. In 2021, the Department of Nephrology successfully completed 30 renal transplantation surgeries. NIMS Medicity performs renal transplants at one of the lowest rates in Kerala and has recently signed an MoU with the Sri Sathya Sai Orphanage Trust – Kerala to perform a minimum of 12 renal transplants per year for underprivileged patients living below the poverty line.
MEDICAL AID FOR PATIENTS BELOW THE POVERTY LINE
As NIMS Medicity is located in a rural area, the financial capacity of the local population to afford quality medical treatment has always been a concern. In keeping with the vision of providing high-quality healthcare with competence and compassion at an affordable cost to all, without discrimination, NIMS Medicity implemented the project titled “Medical Aid for BPL Patients.”
Under this project, financial assistance is provided to needy and economically disadvantaged patients to meet the cost of their medical treatment.
NIMS FREE MEDICAL CAMPS
The NIMS Free Medical Camp is one of the key initiatives of NIMS Medicity aimed at delivering healthcare services to meet the immediate medical needs of marginalized communities in remote rural areas. These health camps have been conducted regularly for several years by NIMS Medicity. During these camps, health check-ups, consultations, and medicines are provided entirely free of cost. Medical professionals from various super-specialty departments, including Cardiology, Orthopaedics, Gastroenterology, Ophthalmology, and Physiotherapy, actively participate in these camps. Free diagnostic tests such as blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, GRBS, ECG, and eye tests are conducted on-site. Patients requiring further medical attention are referred to NIMS Medicity for continued treatment. The project also provides an opportunity for socially responsible individuals and organizations to contribute by donating towards free medicines for underprivileged patients.
ADOPTION OF STUDENTS FROM WAYANAD
Kerala recently experienced one of its most devastating natural disasters as a landslide in Wayanad left thousands affected. Many lives were lost, and countless individuals faced the tragedy of losing their loved ones, homes, and stability. In solidarity with the victims of this calamity, Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE) launched the “Wayanad Habilitation Program”, an initiative aimed at supporting those affected by offering free education to the victims. Under this program, NICHE has adopted 53 students, ensuring they receive quality education at no cost.
Additionally, NICHE has decided to extend the benefits of the Neyyattinkara Pension Plan to Wayanad. Through this initiative, disabled children from Wayanad will be provided with a monthly pension to support their well-being. Preparations for this project are in full swing, and its official launch is scheduled for the coming month. This dual initiative underscore NICHE’s commitment to humanitarian aid and its dedication to uplifting communities in distress.
NIMS Medicity has proudly become the first hospital in Kerala to implement a complete Khadi dress code for all its staff and students, marking a significant step towards promoting indigenous products and sustainable living. The landmark initiative, titled the “NIMS Khadi Movement,” was officially inaugurated on 26th March 2022 by Shri V. Muraleedharan, Hon’ble Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, at a special ceremony held at NIMS Medicity. Under this initiative, not only the uniforms of doctors, nurses, students, and other staff members have been made from Khadi, but even the beds and linen used across the hospital are crafted from this eco-friendly, handspun Indian fabric. The movement aims to revive and popularize Khadi as a symbol of national pride and sustainable living, while also playing a meaningful role in uplifting the livelihoods of Khadi workers across the country. By integrating Khadi into the daily fabric of institutional life, NIMS Medicity sets a powerful example of how healthcare institutions can contribute to social welfare, environmental responsibility, and the strengthening of India’s rural economy.
NIMS KHADI MOVEMENT
In 2022, NIMS Medicity became Kerala’s first hospital to adopt a complete Khadi dress code for all staff and students. Inaugurated by Shri V. Muraleedharan, Hon’ble Minister of State, the initiative goes beyond attire – it embodies a mission to uplift the downtrodden families engaged in the Khadi industry, while promoting sustainability, self-reliance, and environmental responsibility. By replacing conventional fabrics with Khadi for uniforms, bedsheets, and linen across the campus, NIMS Medicity champions eco-friendly healthcare and supports India’s traditional artisans, reaffirming its commitment to the nation’s ethos of Swadeshi and inclusive development.
NIMS AYUSH – COVID TREATMENT CENTRE AT NIMS MEDICITY
NIMS Medicity commenced the operation of COVID Care Centre under NIMS AYUSH Project (The name “Ayush” is derived from the word Ayus mentioned in the Atharva veda and Rig veda meaning ‘life, duration of life or long life’) in the month of August 5, 2020.
NIMS Ayush is a category ‘C’ COVID treatment centre approved by the Government of Kerala and PM JAY, currently treating around 200 patients. The Centre is equipped with Ventilators, BIPAP, Dialysis facility, HFNC, 21-Bedded ICU and other services.
NIMS Ayush is an independent separate block inside NIMS Medicity premise with separate entry and exits to prevent the mixing of COVID and Non COVID patients. Till date we have treated more than 5000 COVID 19 Category “C” patients at this centre.
NIMS Medicity was also the first private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram District to be the designated COVID 19 vaccination centre for the first and second phase of Covid-19 vaccination from day one. During the phase one and phase two vaccination drives, we implemented very efficient and effective infection control policies and systematic administrative procedures which made NIMS Medicity one of the most preferred vaccination centre for the common man.
FREE MEDICINE FOR HIV PATIENTS
NIMS Medicity established the state’s first dedicated HIV clinic, offering completely free treatment and antiretroviral drugs for patients living with HIV/AIDS.
“NIMS AMULYA” – NUTRITIOUS FOOD FOR CANCER PATIENTS
Under the “NIMS Amulya” project, free milk is distributed daily to cancer patients admitted to the Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram. This initiative aims to provide essential nutritional support to patients undergoing cancer treatment.
SAPLING FOR A NEWBORN BABY
A new life is a wonder of nature, and the birth of every baby at NIMS Medicity is a moment of joy and pride. At NIMS, we celebrate this special occasion by presenting a tree sapling – a symbolic gift to both the newborn and nature. This “Birth Tree” grows alongside the child, representing life, growth, and continuity. Over the years, as many such children and saplings thrive, they will together form a forest of happiness and hope.
NIMS HARITHAKAM
Under the “NIMS Harithakam” initiative, NIMS established NIMS Naturals and launched a mission to plant 1,00,000 fruit-bearing trees. To date, more than 40,000 saplings have been planted across various locations in the district. A Medicinal Plant Garden has also been established at Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education, featuring over 1,000 medicinal plants native to the pristine Kanyakumari District. In an effort to promote and preserve traditional farming practices, NIMS has also introduced beekeeping (apiculture) units in and around the university campus, supporting sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.
NIMS FREE FOOD ITEMS KIT FOR INPATIENTS
“NIMS Free food item kit for inpatients” is a project implemented during the COVID pandemic in association with Triveni Consumerfed, where all inpatients of NIMS Medicity, at the time of their discharge will be provided with a coupon which may be redeemed at the Triveni Consumerfed mobile shop stationed at NIMS Medicity campus for purchase of groceries and other essential commodities. The special features of the project is that it is implemented in association with Consumerfed and the discharged patients are free to select the groceries or other essential commodities according to their need and preference.
The goal behind the project was to provide the discharged patients with the most essential grocery and other commodities so that they can carry the essential groceries along with them while they return to their homes. Also, through this project the discharged patients need not go to shops or other crowded places for purchase of groceries thereby abiding to the COVID 19 protocols.
FREE CIVIL SERVICE COACHING
Noorul Islam Civil Service Academy is a School – Student Level Civil Service Programme named after the Veteran Gandhian “Padma Shri P. Gopinathan Nair. The noble vision of the Academy is to provide free training to the school students not only to prepare them for Civil Service and other competitive examinations but also to provide them a platform for developing interpersonal skills through debates, seminars, group discussions etc. NIMS Civil service academy is privileged to be the first to conceptualize such an idea of free school level civil service training for the rural students. Eight batches of students from various rural areas of Thiruvananthapuram District have already enrolled in the academy. The students are selected based on the entrance.
